Moises (Mo) Chavira

1997 - 2010

Mo played Shafter Youth Football from the time he was an eight year old in 2005 until his 8th grade season in 2010. At every level Mo exemplified the spirit of Shafter Youth Football in his practice ethic and leadership. It should be noted that due to his age and weight Mo never played at the JV level, playing Varsity for 3 years. A rare feat in youth football. Mos impact on the team was immediate. Although only 12 years old and playing with 13 and 14 year olds, he made an immediate impact on both the offensive and defensive line. He became the strong point of both lines, constantly being referred to as the tip of the sword. Mo became a complete football player, yet remained very coachable As a 12 year old he assumed a leadership position with the lineman and soon was one of the team leaders, A role he would maintain until his final game as a Gladiator. Mo was honored at the end of his 8th grade season with his selection to the Army All California team and played in the North South Bowl in Visalia that December.

Mo also excelled in the classroom, making honor roll his final 2 seasons. This achievement in itself was indicative of the type of person Mo was. He initially struggled in the classroom, barely passing. It was pointed out to Mo that if he wanted to continue to play at any level his grades would have to improve. He set out to work as hard in the classroom as he did on the playing field and within 2 years was an honor roll student.

He was also dedicated to his family, church and community. He encouraged others to make themselves better, not only as players but as human beings. Mos heart was as big and kind as he was. He was the first person to assist any teammate and was extremely respectful of all his elders. Every person regardless of age had only the highest praise for him.

Tragically, Moe died as a result of injuries he suffered in a car accident in Dec of 2012. He was visiting family members in Southern California and was hospitalized in Loma Linda Ca where he died. Even though Loma Linda is a 31/2 hour drive from Shafter, his final moments were shared by an large contingent of friends, admirers who gave up part of their Christmas celebration to be with Mo. His impact on all our lives will never be forgotten. This is why Shafter Youth Football will be honoring, on an annual basis, an outgoing 8th grade student/athlete with the Moises Chavira Memorial Trophy.

The criteria for the award shall be as follows :

  • Outgoing 8th grade student/athlete

  • 2 year participation in Gladiator program

  • Positive contribution on the playing field

  • Positive contribution on the practice field

  • 2.5 GPA

  • Letter of recommendation from current or prior Gladiator coach

  • Service to the community

  • Good citizenship in school and the community

This award will be presented annually at the Gladiator awards banquet. The recipient will receive a commemorative trophy and his/her name will be placed on the eternal trophy with all the past years recipients.
